What is paediatric dentistry?

Paediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry that looks after children’s oral health, from the first tooth to the teenage years. Its aim is to prevent tooth decay, treat problems early and make sure the teeth and bite develop properly.

Baby teeth matter: they allow children to chew and speak properly and hold the space for the adult teeth. That is why they should be checked regularly even when there is no discomfort.

Who is it for?

  • Babies with their first teeth
  • Children who have never been to the dentist
  • Children with tooth decay, stains or pain
  • Monitoring growth and bite
  • Teenagers who need a check-up before orthodontics

    First visit

We get to know your child, check their mouth without rushing and answer the family’s questions.

  2. 02

    Prevention

Cleaning, fluoride and fissure sealants when appropriate.

  3. 03

    Treatment

If there is tooth decay or another problem, we treat it and explain every step to your child.

  4. 04

    Check-ups

We schedule regular check-ups and, if needed, assess for orthodontics.

The first visit takes about 30 minutes. We recommend check-ups every six months, or as often as we advise depending on each child’s risk of tooth decay.

When should a child first see the dentist?

We recommend the first visit when the first tooth comes through, or by the child’s first birthday at the latest. This lets us prevent tooth decay from the start and helps the child get used to visiting the dentist.

What are fissure sealants?

A thin coating applied to the grooves of the back teeth to stop food and bacteria building up. It is a quick, painless treatment that helps prevent tooth decay.

Does decay in baby teeth need treating?

Yes. Untreated decay can cause pain and infection and affect the adult tooth forming underneath.

How can I prepare my child for the visit?

Talk about the visit naturally and avoid words that might frighten them. We explain everything in simple language and at their own pace.
