What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening lightens the colour of the teeth with a gel that acts on the pigments in the enamel and dentine. When prescribed and supervised by a dentist, it is a safe treatment that does not damage the enamel.

It can be done in the clinic, at home with custom-made trays, or with a combination of both. Before we start we check your mouth, because tooth decay or inflamed gums must be treated first, and fillings or crowns do not change colour.

Who is it for?

  • Teeth that have yellowed or darkened over the years
  • Stains from coffee, tea, wine or smoking
  • Anyone who wants a brighter smile before an event
  • Before veneers or crowns, to set the colour

Does whitening damage the enamel?

No, when it is prescribed and supervised by a dentist using approved products. You may have temporary sensitivity during treatment, which goes away when it ends.

Will my fillings and crowns whiten?

No. The gel only works on natural teeth; if you have visible fillings or crowns, they may need replacing afterwards to match the new shade.

How much whiter will my teeth get?

It depends on your starting shade and the type of staining. Several shades lighter is usual; we give you a realistic expectation at your first visit.

Can pregnant women or under-18s have it?

It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for under-18s unless specifically advised by the dentist.
