The Dentists Sotogrande clinic, where root canal treatment is carried out

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment, or endodontics, removes the inflamed or infected tissue from inside the tooth (the pulp or nerve), then cleans, disinfects and seals the root canals.

It is the alternative to extracting the tooth. Afterwards the tooth is restored and often protected with a crown so it can keep working normally for many years.

Who is it for?

  • Severe or persistent toothache
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Deep decay that has reached the nerve
  • Dental infection or abscess
  • A broken tooth with the nerve exposed
Step by step

How treatment works

  1. 01

    Diagnosis

Examination and X-ray to confirm the nerve is affected.

  2. 02

    Anaesthetic and cleaning

Under local anaesthetic, we remove the nerve and clean and disinfect the canals.

  3. 03

    Sealing

We fill and seal the canals to prevent further infection.

  4. 04

    Restoration

We rebuild the tooth and, if it is badly weakened, consider a crown.

Typical duration

Root canal treatment is usually done in one or two sessions of 60 to 90 minutes. Back teeth, which have more canals, may take longer than front teeth.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

Root canal treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so it is usually well tolerated. In fact, its purpose is to relieve the pain caused by an inflamed or infected nerve.

Isn’t it better to take the tooth out?

Whenever possible, keeping your natural tooth is the best option: it maintains your bite and stops the neighbouring teeth from moving. If it cannot be saved, we explain the alternatives, such as an implant.

Will the tooth be weaker?

It can be more fragile, especially if it had a large cavity. That is why it is important to restore it well and, in many cases, protect it with a crown.

What aftercare is needed?

Some discomfort for a few days is normal. Avoid chewing on that tooth until it has been restored and follow the medication advice we give you.
