Dental veneers can change the shape, colour and size of your teeth with minimal intervention. There are two main materials, and each has different advantages.
Composite veneers
These are made directly in the clinic, applying resin to the tooth layer by layer and sculpting it by hand.
- Usually done in a single visit.
- Need very little preparation of the tooth, sometimes none.
- More affordable and easy to repair.
- Over the years they can lose their shine or stain and may need polishing or touching up.
Porcelain veneers
These are made in the laboratory from a scan or impression of your mouth and bonded at a second appointment.
- Very strong, keeping their colour and shine for many years.
- Reproduce the translucency of natural teeth very well.
- Usually need minimal preparation of the enamel.
- Need two or three appointments over two to four weeks.
Which is right for me?
It depends on what you want to correct, the condition of your teeth and your expectations. Composite is a good choice for small changes or to try out a new smile design; porcelain is usually chosen for a longer-lasting result across several teeth. If you clench or grind your teeth, we will recommend a night guard to protect either type.
Before you decide
Ideally you start with a smile design and, where possible, a trial so you can see the result before any work on your teeth. If you also want a lighter shade, whitening is done before the veneers.
