Seeing blood on your toothbrush or when you spit is very common, which is why many people ignore it. But healthy gums do not bleed: bleeding is the most common sign that they are inflamed.
Gingivitis: the reversible stage
The most common cause is gingivitis, inflammation of the gums caused by plaque building up along the gum line. The gums look red and swollen and bleed easily. The good news is that, with a professional clean and good oral hygiene at home, it clears up.
Periodontitis: when the bone is affected
If gingivitis is not treated it can progress to periodontitis, where the inflammation gradually destroys the bone that holds the teeth in place. Signs include persistent bad breath, receding gums, sensitivity and, over time, loose teeth. It is one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults.
Risk factors
- Smoking, which can also mask bleeding.
- Diabetes, especially if it is not well controlled.
- Pregnancy, because of hormonal changes.
- Stress, some medicines and family history.
