Summer brings ice creams, fizzy drinks and relaxed routines, and brushing often slips. That is why August is a good time for a children’s dental check-up before the school year starts.
Catching tooth decay early
Decay in baby teeth progresses quickly and often does not hurt until it is large. At a check-up we find it while treatment is still simple, so your child does not miss school because of toothache.
Sealants on new back teeth
The first adult molars come through at around six, and the second ones at around twelve. Their grooves are deep and trap food. Fissure sealants protect them quickly and painlessly.
A first orthodontic assessment
Children are recommended to have a first orthodontic assessment at around seven. It does not mean they will need a brace: it checks that the jaws are growing properly and, if treatment is needed, allows us to act at the right time.
Sport and mouthguards
If they start activities such as hockey, rugby or martial arts in September, they should wear a mouthguard for training and matches. Our article on sports mouthguards explains how to choose one.
Habits for the new school year
- Back to the routine: two minutes of brushing in the morning and before bed.
- Snacks without pastries or cartons of juice: fruit, a sandwich and water.
- A water bottle in the school bag instead of sugary drinks.
