Clear aligners such as Invisalign have become the first choice for many adults who want to straighten their teeth discreetly. Before you start, it is worth being clear on these seven points.
1. Can my case be treated with aligners?
Most cases of crowding, gaps and many bite problems can be treated with aligners. For some complex cases fixed braces are still more suitable. You will know after the initial records.
2. How many hours a day do I need to wear them?
Between 20 and 22 hours. They only come out for eating, drinking anything other than water and brushing. If you wear them less, treatment takes longer or does not progress as planned.
3. What about meals?
You can eat whatever you like, because you take them out. Before putting them back in, brush your teeth or at least rinse well so you do not trap food.
4. How do I clean them?
With a soft brush and cold or lukewarm water, never hot, as they can warp. Always keep them in their case when you are not wearing them.
5. Will people notice when I talk or smile?
They are very discreet. For the first few days you may notice a slight change in how you say some sounds, which soon passes. In some cases small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are added, and they are barely visible.
6. How long does treatment take?
From a few months for simple cases to one or two years for more complex ones. Check-ups are usually every 6 to 10 weeks.
7. What happens at the end?
Teeth tend to drift back, which is why you need to wear a retainer, fixed or removable. It is as important as the treatment itself.
