Getting a dental implant raises lots of questions, especially the first time. Knowing what happens at each stage helps you go in feeling relaxed. Here it is step by step.

Before: assessment and planning

Everything starts with a full examination and an X-ray study to check the amount and quality of the bone. We also go through your medical history: some factors, such as smoking or poorly controlled diabetes, affect healing and need to be taken into account. With that information we explain your options, the timescale and the cost.

During: an outpatient procedure

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel pain. For a single implant the procedure takes about an hour. Afterwards you can go home; most patients carry on as normal the next day.

After: the first few days

Some swelling and discomfort for a few days is normal.

Healing and the final tooth

The implant usually needs between 3 and 6 months to bond with the bone. In the meantime, if the gap is visible, you can wear a temporary tooth. Once the implant has integrated, we fit the final crown, custom-made to match your bite and look natural.

In the long term

A well-cared-for implant can last for many years. It needs the same oral hygiene as a natural tooth and regular check-ups to monitor the bone and gum around it.
